Pidkamin' 2008: Never stop the MUDness

Place of conduction:  Pidkamin’ village, one of the most mysterious and picturesque area not far from L’viv.
Date of birth: 2007

This year a powerful ethnical festival "Pidkamin'" took its place for the second time. It became extreme.

Bliss is to be dry, satisfied and comfortable. But a real bliss is to put away all conditions and convention and to dance in a puddle of mud together with friends, screaming to the sky towards raindrops; to crawl to a wet sleeping bag, and the early next morning to plunge into a next day of muddy madness; having came back home, to shout from a doorstep "It is better then sex!". That was what "Pidkamin'-2008" looked like. Now in details. The First day: To be or not to be?
Nature does not have a bad weather. However, it has permanent rains that could interrupt the plans of music lovers and festival organizers. Nevertheless, it did not happen. Perpetual raining   for three weeks before festival made potential visitors to doubt if the festival will take place at all. However, rain did not stop professional crew of organizers, nor did mud, nor did wash off road.

Guests, who from the very morning slowly filed the festival field watched the last preparations skeptically, but no one left the territory. Having crossed the borders of mud, newcomers selected place for settlement. This year it was possible to settle either in the camping or in nearby forest, and comfort-lovers could rent rooms in the village. The latter was not very expensive 25-40 hrn per night.

While everybody searched for a roof, the time for opening came. At last, a voice of a presenter Andriy Zholob sounded from a scene (for the second day a charismatic Misko Barbara from "Mertvy Piven'" band joined him and they both made people to roll on a ground laughing). Accompanied by authentic singing of "DoSkhidSoncia" girls band, visitors finished eating and drinking and started to crawl towards the scene, before which was a main attraction of the festival - a huge dance floor of mud. Finally a real madness started! Having taken their redundant dress off, publics began to conquer the muddy slush. Adrenalin and people's energy fought with nature and won.

Opening band "TaRUTA" quickly rallied hundreds of bare feet to a mud-bath. The inflammatory music of "Rusychi" band made to rock thousands, among which appeared first "mud-divers" that were not embarrassed to roll in slush. By the way, the band got to the scene on a common cart, what caused a furor among visitors. Having finished their programme "Rusychi" freed the scene for a first-day headliner band "Yurcash". That was a good idea to invite those guys. For a long time our people have not experienced such a fiery fervency. Witty songs and sharp jokes by Yurko Yurchenko made to leave all behind and to dance. Even a cold pouring rain did not become an obstacle. Before the scene there was heat: visitors took off their wet sweatshirts and went into a puddling of dirty dances.

After the live show there started a disco under a slogan "Listen to Ukrainian!". Few careless guys dived into mud, swam in it and were going mad as far as they could. Others started to drop away to their tents to dry and to warm themselves.

The second day: Let's all get up and dance to a song
The next day the quantity of festival visitors doubled. Columns of festival "pilgrims" filled all the territory. Some have got there by feet, others by cars. The latter were sorry for their choice, because the vehicles were stuck is the mud. Then a metal Pidkamin' hero, a small old tractor came to help. It pulled cars out of the sludge like vegetables from the ground; this have became one more merry entertainment.

Besides this due to huge work of organizers, all planned attractions took their place. Beyond a famous rock ("Pidkamin'" - literally "under the rock") knights demonstrated their mastership, aside the road the Cossacks from "Kurkove (Nab) community". Over all festival territory, numerous master-classes took place, and on the small scene folk bands from Lviv, Kherson, Kyiv etc performed traditional songs.

A special playground was installed for kids and skillful voluntaries diverted them during the festival. Sashko Lirnyk (the Lyrist), a living symbol of Ukrainian festivals, became an attraction for both kids and parents with his thrilling and mysterious tales.

Near a new-made pond penmen from literature cafe "Cabinet" situated. During a festival, one could listen to good poetry and to meet both young and famous Ukrainian writers: Yuriy Izdryk, Maryana Savka, Dmytro Dobry-Vechir, Halyna Hevkiv, Yuriy Kucheriavy, Misko Barbara.

Before a beginning of musical programme, the visitors got one more trial. After the sunny day, another heavy shower started; that made to shift a beginning of a concert for a while. Nevertheless, when "Choboty z bugaya" band came to the scene, visitors forgot about cold, mud and other inconveniences, rushed to conquer the sludge again. "We all are punks!" - shouts a girl and jumps into the mud with scream. People seemed to have a lot of fun in the mud. Gutsul melodies of "Burdon" and merry melodic songs by "Soncekliosh" made even local inhabitants to join the mud madness.

Slowly the territory was benighted, and after a fantastically flaming performance of "DrymbaDaDzyga" a legend of Ukrainian folk rock "VV" (led by Oleg Skrypka) came to the scene. The band was delivered to the stage on a car pulled by the heroic tractor. Their performance was of such successes that even the mud grided under feet (and on teeth).

The third day: show me the way to the next whiskey bar
The last day of festival was warm and sunny. Some people lest either because all their clothes got wet or because of official duties, but smile was on their faces and warmth was in their hearts. "This was really wonderful! - says one of leaving guests. - I will come the next year for shure. In the case of sunny weather, I wish organizers made a mud on purpose. Really, I've never had so much fun".
Music of the last day has not disappointed melomaiacs. "Perkalaba" featuring writer Yuriy Izdryk on keyboards, mystical "Viy", iridescent "Vertep", famous in Lviv "Dyvni" performed on the same scene in one day. Headliner of the festival was reunited legend of Lviv rock "Mertvy Piven'". Is it worth to describe, what went on under the stage? You better find one of those 10 000 visitors and ask them yourself.
Organizers promise that in 2009 there will be yet more attractions and joys. Nevertheless, they keep silence about mud... Come to Pidkamin'-2009 and check it yourself!
