"Flugery Lvova-2008"

(lit. - "The weather-vanes of Lviv")
March 1-4, inner yard of city hall.

So what, have you been to  "Frugery Lvova"? If yes, you do already know what a pleasure could be those four days of ethnical jazz. The remebrances and impressions will last tsll the next year. And those who did not manage toget to the epicentre of ethnic-jazz tornado can read here what they had missed. The main features of the festival were: London blues band accompanied with Lviv symphonical orchestra "Leopolis", performances of jazz big bands consisting of up to 20 members, a beautiful presenteress coming down from a stage to chat wih the audience, Polish consul participating in jam sessions, musicians showing dance master classes, children shouting they love jazz, touching encores and audience that stays for hours arfter the end of the concert.
Here the world musicians like Ken Vandermark become approachable and ingenuous, Lviv masters of complicated jazz - jokers, folk musicians - philosohers.
Where else yo would see Yuriy Izdryk, the writer playing late night piano concerto accompanied by Halyna Kruk's recitation of her own verses, "Mertvy Piven" gathering the whole square of fans at 10 am (notithstanding it was th sventh day of global Lviv celebration), stage overcrowded with musitians willing to take part in jam session?

Mood
Imagine Lviv celebrating its birthday: solemnities, concerts, overcrowded cafes, a lot of walking tours and nationalistic uniforms, fancy lions and frilly tourists, street theaters and spontaneus impromptus...
Finally an evening falls and having got tired of all the carnival rumpus and hurly-burly you get to your jazz shelter and dissolve in music and in flavours of coffee, cigars and spring blosom...
Watch the clock tower of the city hall and glimmer of candles, watch the sedate men with nistalgic faces drinking cognac and the youth with beer sittin on the ground, feel jazz melodies envelop your body and crawl inside, and finally raise your head and watch the tranquil starry sky...

Action
From May 1 to 4 the winds of the Sixth International Jazz Festival "Flugery Lvova" brought not only traditional Lviv rains, but also a showers of emotions, a cloud of good music and for those who let themselves go by all 40% of spirits - also a chance to fall down together with rain.
1. Opening of the festival was marked by crowds of musicians on the stage and lyric mood of the audience. Theese were the reasons: melodical performance from Lviv "Dzyga Imagine" that mixed jazz with Guzul traditional melodies; quality sound from expirienced jazzmen from Roman Khabal's jazz band; sprightly and known melodies performed by the young students' big band of Lviv national music academy conducted by Volodymyr Kononchuk.
Next British bluesman Julian Thomas appeared on the stage. He comes to Lviv so frequently and has such a huge munber of fans, that probably could move to Lviv for a permanent residence. A record number of hugs and kisses among the audience were made to Julian's sentimental melodies accompanied by skillful and refined "Leopolis" orchestra.
2. Pure and true jazz filled the city hall yard on the second day. It started with acoustic composition by Viktor Palamarchuk from Zaporizhia and Arno Smit from Berlin. After first depressive compositions both tempo and mood increased. Next was "MT-3" (Martyn Tverdun trio) with their powerful and skillful program, higly respecxted by jazz fans.
The old stagers of Lviv jazz "Dzyga Jazz Quartet", who could teach all other musicians how to play, and "Open Blues Band", whose heavy blues sound could easily beat any AC/DC, continued the concert.
Finally fans of the most complicated jazz branch got a reason to enjoy: an American master of jazz impromptu and owner of prestigious McArtur award Ken Vandermark. Only few chosen could understand his music, others slowly faded and left.

3. Etnical day could easily make the city hall to collapse, succesfully it did not. The small yard was cracking at the seams because of people; it seemed that they will flood the scene also. From he firm notes they started to dance letting themselves go, especally when "Bordon" (lit. - drone) started to play Guzul folk melodies with a number of ethnical instruments.
"Rusychi" from Belgorod-Dnostrovsy brought a song about Sich Riflemen and a bunch of folk hits. A secret of their success - to play famous songs with hot arrangements that let no one to stay calm. All the more, they have a lot of friends in Lviv. "DrymbaDaDzyga" presented yet more heavy folk arrangements. "GulayGorod" brought traditional songs from villages that were flooded when Soviets built Kremenchuk pond.
After everybody grew quiet, Yuriy Izdryk sits at the synthesizer and accompanies Halyna Kruk as she reads her poems. Projector showing some misty pictures... People rose in the rhythm of the poems... Midnight.

4. Many fans of "Mertvy Piven'" band rushed to the centre in morning, to be in time for the "The awakening of dead rooster" at 10 o'clock. No other action could gather such a number of people in the morning after the night before.
Since 6pm "Flugery Lvova" continued its activity within the framework of "Europe days" in Lviv. Acidjazz band "Shokolad" could take prizes on electronic music festivals, but that day they only gathered a whole square of frinends and fans shouting "encore". Later on Viennese band "Heimwehtropfen" presented a collection of European street songs.
Polish fusion band "Sing Sing Penelope" finally made the audience to grow into akind f trance, from which they were resqued by energic "Volki Bekesh". Lithuanians long after the performance looked euphoric and huged every Ukrainian saying "that you friend", but they were called for encore till the jam session begun.
Jam session ended, the light faded, but none wet home. Sound engineers put heavy metal records, but none was eager to leave. Finally a headman of Ukrainian rock Nadolsky occupied the drumset and the carnival continued till the electricity was switched off. End at last. It was showy.

People
They can be seen once per year, on this festival. Setade jazz fans, families with children, artists, writers, Polish tourists, that arrived specially for the festival and the main element - youth. A colorful mass of non-typical persons that can dance wonderfully and expressively, changing their movements according with the music... Once got to "Flugery" you start wondering there are so many people like you. After an hour one starts realizing everybody has become the single body, living with the same rhythm. And the next year one just can not pass over the festival, smiling to every familiar face.

Intentions

Live and sincere, though elite festival keeps its colouring for years due to constant reincarnations, metamorphoses and surprises. It is not strange, because "Flugery Lvova" is a creation of "Dzyga" art association, due to which Lviv is associated not only with history, but also with avantgarde culture. So if you plan to expirience a few celebration days together with Lviv, listen to its heart beating in folk rhythms, watch stone lions sleeping with jazz tunes and the weather-vanes spinning with jazz winds - welkome to "Flugery Lvova 2009".
