Tyzhden'/ Week of Contemporary Art The Tyzhden'/ Week of Contemporary Art
(22-29 August 2010, L’viv)
It’s for the third time L’viv will host the significant event in the artistic life of Ukraine, the Project "Tyzhden’/ Week of Contemporary Art aimed to promote the development of contemporary art
The Tyzhden’/Week of Contemporary Art» provides the space for creation, search and generation of new trends in art and their transfer to the Ukrainian audience. It’s an attempt to accumulate in one area & at the same time the artists from different countries & of different generations who are involved in the sphere of contemporary art /with all following predictable and unexpected consequences/.
The Project is divided into three blocks – the Author’s Projects, Days of Performance Art in L’viv , MediaDepo and includes performances, installations, projects of "new media, video, movies, roundtables, lectures, discussions and master classes.
Every one year the Tyzhden’ offers a new theme/subject: in 2008 it was “Potency of Emptiness”, in 2009 - "BN" (Untitled).
In 2010 the proposed theme will be ON THE BOUNDARY: Abstract versus Real
Abstraction as one of the fundamental ideas of 20th century art, was elaborated in the context of the development of modernism (late 19th - early 20th centuries). Exactly one hundred years ago, in1910, Wassily Kandinsky wrote his famous treatise Concerning the Spiritual In Art and then createdhis first abstract watercolors. A radical departure, divergency from figurative vision of the world, from anthropomorphic representation and perspective that have dominated in the European Art since the Renaissance took place towards the non-figurative art.
Malevich, Tatlin, Pollock, Rothko, Fontana, Manzoni have managed to expand the possibilitiesof visual expression not only formally but they revealed the philosophical potentiality of Abstraction its self-sufficiency and ability to embody spiritual & intellectual “substance” in the piece of art. The Tyzhden’/Week of Contemporary Art -2010 raises a question concerning the future of abstraction and its relationship with realism, as the last one hasn’t disappeared and it has been existing alongside with "pure" abstraction. So, the reality of Abstraction and the abstractiveness of Realism will be the subject of the Tyzhden'-2010.
Where are the bounds?
